UNITED YOUTH FOR PEACE, EDUCATION, TRANSPARENCY AND DEVELOPMENT IN LIBERIA. (UYPETDL)

ABOUT US

UYPETDL is a pro-Democracy, peace building and Development advocacy Civil Society organization that started working in Liberia since 2009 and registered with the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and accredited by the Ministry of Planning & Economic Affairs and Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in 2010. UYPETDL is one of the outstanding CSOs working in the water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and nutrition sectors of Liberia since 2009 with tangible achievements. UYPETDL has well trained personnel with long working experiences in WASH governance, budget and Nutrition advocacy, legislative engagement, budget tracking and monitoring and citizen’s engagements.

UYPETDL staff have benefited from many budget tracking, monitoring and advocacy training using advance tools. The National Executive Director, Mr. Timothy Kpeh recently completed a master class in Accountability for Water fellowship training managed by the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (Kenya) and Water Witness (UK).

UYPETDL has been successful in its advocacy for policy reforms and budget allocation for WASH at both national and local levels. Some achievements of UYPETDL over the years includes but not limited to the following: 

  • The endorsement of the Liberia WASH Compact in 2012, 

  • The establishment of the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Commission (NWSHC) in 2018, 

  • The establishment of the Legislative WASH Caucus in 2016,

  • The allocation of funds in the National Budget for WASH since 2018, 

  • Increased citizen’s participation in WASH and nutrition decision making processes using Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA). 

  • The development and review of the National WASH guidelines including WASH in School Protocols with consideration of gender mainstreaming;  

  • The establishment of Standing Committee on WASH & Environment 

  • The establishment of WASH Caucus Secretariat with an office space at the Legislature 

  • UYPETDL HRBA and Advocacy strategies have contributed to getting the political will of both the Legislatures and Executive in prioritizing WASH.  Promoting gender, equity and inclusion are key areas of UYPETDL WASH interventions and this has resulted into increased participation of women, girls and persons living with disabilities in WASH activities at both national and local levels.

  • UYPETDL has implemented project with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning under the Integrated Public Financial Management Reforms (IPFMR) with specific focus on County and Social Development Funds Budgets tracking and monitoring and dissemination of budget information among citizens using the Citizens Guides to the National Budget. 

  • UYPETDL has conducted series of budget tracking initiatives intended to promote transparency and accountability in the use of resources allocated to WASH in Liberia; findings from those budget tracking reports have been able to inform national decision making at national and local levels.

UYPETDL is an award winning Youth organization with over 10 awards/certificates in WASH, Nutrition and youth empowerment initiatives. UYPETDL is specialized in coordinating networks organizations in project implementation. UYPETDL has coordinated activities of the following Networks: 

  1. Liberia CSOs WASH Network and CSOs Committee on WASH & Climate Change 

  2. Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) CSOs Activities in Liberia 

  3. End Water Poverty CSOs Activities in Liberia 

  4. African Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation (ANEW)

  5. Youth and Disabilities WASH Network 

OUR MISSION

To work with the Liberia Government, International partners and other relevant civil society organizations to improve the living conditions of the most marginalized groups, sustain peace and national development, promote policy documents including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) most especially goal 6 to improve access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene services, Maputo Declaration, to end gender based violence, Paris Declaration and National Development Agenda of Liberia, etc.
