Success Story: A New Beginning for Abraham’s Family

Before the intervention
Before the intervention

Background

Abraham, a private security Officer and father of six, lived with his family in a modest mud house in Cook Spoon Hill, Pipeline Community, Paynesville City, Liberia. The home was their only source of security, providing shelter and a space for their children to learn and grow.

The Challenge

During a night of heavy rainfall, Abraham’s house collapsed. The family was left homeless, forced to live under a makeshift shelter of sticks and tarpaulin. Each rainfall brought fear and uncertainty. “Each time the clouds grew dark, my children would hold onto me in fear,” Abraham recalled. “I had no answer for them. I felt powerless.” Abraham, in such a bad situation, got very sick to the point that he could not do his private security work anymore, and getting food daily was a major challenge.

The Intervention

Through its housing support program, John Bruns, the Founder of the Heart to Serve Mission, assessed Abraham’s situation and intervened to provide a safe, durable home. Skilled builders of a local NGO called the United Youth for Peace, Education, Transparency and Development in Liberia (UYPETDL) Inc. worked alongside community members, while Abraham himself and his older children contributed labor, ensuring the family’s ownership and pride in the process.

The Outcome

Today, September 1, 2025, Abraham and his family live in a strong, rain-resistant home. His children now study without fear of storms, and the family enjoys renewed safety and dignity. Standing at the doorway of his new house, Abraham shared:

“This house is more than shelter. It is a new beginning for my family, and I remain forever grateful to God for his visitation into my family.”
